Julian Assirati

My family and I moved into Hay on Wye in 2016. For my wife it was returning home, for me it was joining a town that had a sense of welcome and real community spirit.  

I have been working with young people since the early 80’s in various clubs, in the community and through youth and adult  football. When coming to Hay I soon got involved with Hay St Mary’s 

Football Club, first the juniors and then the senior section. My involvement in the football club introduced me to HADSCAL and their intention to create a facility for community use. In April ‘22 I was one of a team of volunteers who after months of planning opened a youth club in Hay This further developed the relationship with HADSCAL when they offered dedicated space for young 

people as part of the development.

I recently accepted an invitation to join the board of HADSCAL Trustees. I look forward to being part of this opportunity to create a community space worthy of the people of Hay.

Jeff Morgan

I moved to Hay 15 years ago, after first visiting in the early ‘90s when I started photographing Hay 

Festival for The Guardian newspaper. 

Hay is such a unique place for many reasons, the book town economy, independent shops, a castle 

in the centre of town and above all the people. 

I do love a project and being able to make a practical difference for the community. My voluntary work includes organising Hay Community Woodland Group, promoting and organising Hay Warren Anglers to raise funds for The Warren Trust, working with Brecon Beacons Local Nature Partnership project to increase biodiversity, including managing the rebuilding of The Warren dry stone wall, and helping out with other things where I can. I’m also a town councillor where I am Chair of Estates. 

A small market town the size of Hay has punched above its weight on so many levels for years. For 

such a prestigious town and to have its community centre demolished and not replaced is outrageous. When I was asked to become a director/trustee of HADSCAL I just had to say yes, as I feel I can make a positive impact on the project. 

HADSCAL has had a number of false starts over the years but now is the time to build Hay Community Campus, not just a community centre but the centre of the community.

Gethin Williams

I was brought up on a dairy farm in Llanigon and moved to Hay in my early twenties. I still live in 

Hay in Gipsy Castle with my partner, Rhiannon, and my daughter, Ella. Since leaving high school, I have worked at Hay & Brecon Farmers. Rather than attending university, I chose an apprenticeship through work, studying to become a member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants. My role is now Commercial Accountant and Company Secretary. 

In January 2023, I was co-opted onto Hay Town Council, where I currently serve as chair of the Finance sub-committee and am an active member of the play and recreation areas team.

I was asked to attend HADSCAL meetings as a representative for Hay Town Council, which led to an invitation to become a trustee. I was very pleased to accept and to contribute to bringing such a valuable project to becoming a reality.

Trudy Stedman

I moved to Hay in 2012, having fallen in love with the town and the surrounding countryside. At the 

time I was still commuting to work, (a 90 mile round trip), and while the drive every day wasn't 

much fun, it always felt worthwhile coming home to Hay. 

Between 2015 and 2022 I served on Hay Town Council, alongside volunteering with several local 

groups. I set up and, until recently, ran the Hay Repair Café, and I remain Secretary of the Hay 

Community Woodland Group — the sculpture trail the group funded and installed along the Old 

Railway Line Footpath is a project I'm particularly proud of. 

Community facilities in Hay have been talked about for a long time, but it was the 2024 community engagement exercise that really gave us the impetus to move forward, showing just how badly they were needed. 

I'm lucky that my day job — as Managing Director and joint owner of a small management consultancy — lets me work from home, giving me more time to devote to this development, which I'm passionate about.

Derek Keeble

I moved to the Hay area in the late 60s with my family and attended Clyro primary school. From the early 70s I started playing football for Hay St Marys senior sides. This was the start of my journey of involvement with the football club for over 40 years as a player, manager, secretary and junior coach. HADSCAL's development of 2 football pitches and having floodlights installed transformed the clubs offering to players. 

Over the years I have seen the benefit of what a sense of belonging to a club has done for many youngsters. So, the development of wider community facilities that we can offer to those of all ages is just very important. Less travel to access all community facilities will be such a benefit for all, and I can’t wait for it to come to fruition.
